Dr. A.Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering

KIBGE is a research institute with state-of-the-art facilities to conduct research on modern biological sciences and to impart higher education at the University of Karachi. The institute was established with an aim to foster research-based knowledge relevant to the developing world in the scientific domain of biotechnology and genetic engineering.

Four Interdisciplinary Research Areas

  • There are four interdisciplinary key areas of research at KIBGE: agriculture biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, industrial biotechnology and medical biotechnology.

Research Focus Areas

  • 01Agriculture Biotechnology — food safety and security, antimicrobial resistance, pesticide and heavy metal contamination, sustainable crop production via proteomic and genomic approaches.
  • 02Environmental Biotechnology — biopolymeric nanofibers, nano-composites and nanohybrid systems for controlling environmental pollutants.
  • 03Industrial Biotechnology — enzymes, antimicrobial peptides, biopolymers and nanomaterials via microbial and synthetic biology approaches.
  • 04Medical Biotechnology — hereditary and acquired disorders, cancer genomics, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, disease biomarker discovery.
