The University of Karachi was the pioneer university in Pakistan to recognize the importance of space science, introducing an Astronomy course at the Department of Mathematics in 1952. The Institute of Space Science and Technology (ISST) was established as an autonomous research institute in 1994, and a year later introduced Pakistan's first M.Phil./Ph.D. research program in the field. ISST has since produced research in Computational Astronomy, Cosmology, Space Weather, Star Formation, Galactic Physics, Climate Change and Food Risk Assessment.
