The Department of Statistics, University of Karachi was established in the year 1963.  Both in terms of physical facilities and academic facilities the Department of Statistics is one of the most popular departments within the university.

BS Actuarial Sciences & Risk Management: H.S.C. Science/Arts (with Mathematics) or equivalent with at least 50% marks -  60 seats
BS Third Year in Statistics:  B.A./B.Sc. (Pass) (with Mathematics)  - 50 seats
PGD in Statistics  - 10 seats
PGD in Statistics: Graduation*

*Graduates who have passed B.A./B.Sc. with Statistics optional are not eligible

Learning Outcomes

The Statistics Department offers a degree program leading to the B.S. degree in Statistics in the College of Science and Mathematics.
The Statistics Department graduate will:

  • Have good working knowledge of the most commonly used statistical methods, including
    • statistical modeling and the omnipresent role of variability
    • efficient design of studies and construction of effective sampling plans
    • exploratory data analysis
    • formal inference process
  • Have background in probability, statistical theory, and mathematics, including especially calculus, linear algebra and symbolic and abstract thinking
  • Be able to synthesize and apply knowledge of common inferential methods, understanding the limitations of the procedures and the appropriate scope of conclusions
  • Communicate effectively (written and oral) with skills in collaboration (within and between disciplines) and teamwork, and in organizing and managing projects
  • Have good mastery of several standard statistical software packages and facility with data management strategies
  • Have a focused concentration in an area of application outside the discipline of statistics

The Statistics Department graduate will have received:

  • Experience with real data and authentic applications
  • Frequent opportunities to develop communication skills
  • Capstone experiences for students
  • Frequent interaction with faculty and their peers and timely advising
  • Exposure to statisticians and statistical applications outside the KU community.
Service

The service objectives are to contribute to the on-going and long-term activities of the Department, University, and the statistical community. They include the following:

  • To improve the research and educational environment of the department and the University by facilitating recruitment of faculty and students, serving on committees, and participating in long-term planning activities.
  • To contribute to the statistics profession and to the larger scientific community by serving on editorial boards, review panels, and administrative and advisory committees.
  • To promote statistical reasoning and the use of statistical principles at the University of Karachi and in society at large.

Objectives

Mission

The mission of the Department of Statistics is to contribute to the overall objectives of the University of Karachi and the Affiliated Colleges, Science, and the Arts through excellence in research and education in the Statistical Sciences and through service to the university community, statistical profession, and society at large.

The proliferation of quantitative information in society demands that we help to develop the next generation of statistics professionals while increasing the statistical literacy of our students and the frequency of collaboration with our colleagues. To meet these objectives, the mission of the Statistics Department is to:

  • Deliver a high-quality statistics program for our majors and minors that prepares them for either the workplace or further study in graduate programs;
  • Offer service courses for the university that meet the needs of the various majors and enhance the statistical literacy of the students;
  • Support continued growth of Statistics faculty members as teacher-scholars. To contribute to the theoretical and applied development of the field through scholarly research in core areas of statistical theory and probability and publications in leading professional journals.
  • To contribute to the development of new statistical methodology to address substantive problems and to promote the use of these methods through publications in both statistics and subject-matter journals.
  • To contribute to the advancement of science and technology through interdisciplinary research, jointly with scientists at the University of Karachi and at other research institutions and develop a research culture in society in general.

The Department's goals are to effectively serve the diverse educational needs of the students in the College and the University through a variety of activities and programs. These activities / programs and their objectives are:

  • Service Teaching: To educate the students in the Affiliated Colleges of Karachi University and the University of Karachi in basic principles of statistical reasoning and statistical methods for data collection, analysis, and visualization through a range of introductory and intermediate courses and Postgraduate Diploma.
  • Undergraduate Majors and Minors: To provide specialized training for students interested in careers in Statistics or in pursuing graduate programs in Statistics or related fields; to develop a strong quantitative background in statistics and data analysis for students pursuing a degree in another field.
  • M.S. / Ph.D. program: To prepare M.S. / Ph.D. students for careers in research and consulting by providing them with advanced education in theory and methodology and by training them to carry out independent research.

Over hundred research papers of the faculty members are available on various National and International journals.

Infrastructure & Laboratories

Facilities

The department has a Seminar Library stocked with a number of latest and good books on all branches of statistics. The Library has also a large collection of statistical publications of national and international organizations. The students and researchers are also using the facilities of data bank in the department that has several computer laboratories having more than 100 computers.

Well-equipped Computer Laboratories with an environment of networking and statistical packages such as SAS, SPSS, R, etc are available for students and researchers.
