The teaching faculty includes trained and experienced PhD-holding teachers, with instruction focused on developing independent and analytical thinking. Lecture methods emphasize classroom discussion and feedback, effective use of audio-visual aids, and a regular program of extension lectures from resource persons.

Graduates enter a variety of educational, vocational and rehabilitation fields as speech pathologists, audiologists, and teachers in special education centres for mental retardation, physical handicap, hearing impairment, visual impairment and learning disability — in schools, hospitals, institutes and rehabilitation centres.

The department of Special Education was established in the University of Karachi in 1988. The University of Karachi offers a regular program of studies in Special Education at the graduate as well as the post graduate level for students who intend to serve the Special need Community. During course of studies students are prepared to be Special Education and Rehabilitation experts.
The teaching faculty includes trained and experienced teachers with Ph.D. degrees in the discipline. The teaching in the Department is focused on developing independent and analytical thinking abilities in the student. The program is designed to provide students with opportunities to actually teach children with special needs during the course of studies, so that they can get practical experience along with their academic learning.
Teaching and Assessment
Lecture method with emphasis on classroom discussion and feedback including effective use of audio-visual aids, provision of expertise through resource persons and a regular program of extension lectures are part of formal teaching methodology. Field visits for on the spot observation of special children, particularly, in the classroom children are also arranged.
Career Opportunities
Students of the Department of Special Education continue to enter a variety of educational, vocational and rehabilitation fields. Many are speech pathologists, audiologists, and teachers in different special education centers for mental retardation, physical handicap, hearing impairment, visual impairment, and learning disability. The graduates of the department get jobs in schools, hospitals, institutes, rehabilitation centers, directly or indirectly serving special need children.
Facilities
The Department has lecture and seminar rooms. Audio Visual Room, as well as a well stocked seminar library with most recent books. The department has equipment, which provides practical work facilities to students as well as provide exposure of practical teaching at Special Schools.

Teaching Practice
The Department of Special Education, University of Karachi was established with a vision to develop human resources in the form of highly skilled teachers for persons with special need. To achieve this vision we are providing an effective course of study and training for intended teachers in special education. The student teachers are placed for internship program in all disabilities in different Special Education Schools of Karachi with the following objectives:
- To observe teaching at different levels i.e., Pre-primary, Primary and Secondary level.
- To assess the students with special needs.
- To deliver lessons with the assistance of cooperative teachers in respective schools.
Community Rehabilitation
For this purpose, we provide assessment program planning and referral services like speech therapy, audiometery, home based programs etc in all disabilities.
Objectives
- To promote quality educational services and programs for persons with special needs.
- To advocate for the needs of children and youth with special needs and their families.
- To encourage research and professional growth as vehicles for better understanding of emotional or behavioral & other disorders.
- To disseminate relevant and timely information through professional meetings, training programs, publications, and other media.
- To provide professional support for persons who are involved with and serve children and youth with special needs.
- To engage in efforts to reduce racial, cultural and gender over-representation among children and youth with special needs.
- To promote awareness and advocacy for children and youth with special needs from diverse backgrounds that foster collaborative relationships among families and professionals.

Pakistan Journal of Special Education
- Department of Special Education has been publishing its Annual Research Journal “Pakistan Journal of Special Education” which is recognized by H.E.C. and is a very standard Journal in the field of Special Education. Department is publishing this Journal since 1998 regularly and it is a Peer Reviewed Journal. Its editorial board has Experts from within and outside the country.
