M.Phil.:

At least sixteen years of studies (Master's Degree) or its equivalent qualification with at least second division in the relevant field.

Ph.D.:

• M.Phil. or equivalent qualification in the relevant field form an H.E.C recognized university/institution.
• The admission will be granted on the basis of Test & Interview by the Department Research Committee of the concerned Department/ Center/Institute for admission in Ph.D. program.
• The test will be conducted for those who were not admitted to M.Phil. program through the entry test.
• Those who are coming from other Universities are required to appear in KU Entrance Test.

Facilities

The department has a well stock seminar library with more than 1000 books on the historical background, methods, fields of practice and other numerous other contents relevant to social work education side by side, it also contain around 1000 Theses of students on various Social issues and working of NGOs in social sector. Along with this, Research journals, Reports and Periodicals are also available for students and research scholars.

The department is also equipped with an Audio visual Lab recently named as “Abdul Sattar Edhi Research Lab”. It facilitates faculty members and students in organizing academic activities like seminars, workshops, lectures series etc at departmental level.

Aims & Objective

• To create a better understanding of the scope and concepts of Social Work in the context of Pakistan.
• Identification as a professional social worker to perform accordingly.
• To apply ethical principles off Social Work to guide professional practice.
• Apply critical thinking to inform and communicate professional judgments.
• Enabling students to step into the world outside and beyond the university, with trust in their potential as change makers.
• Prepare students to engage themselves in diverse fields of professional social work to practice at national and international level.

Publication of Research Journal:

“Pakistan Journal of Applied Social Sciences” is launched under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Mohammad Qaiser, Vice Chancellor-University of Karachi by the Department of Social Work-University of Karachi on 8th March 2014. Its Special Issue was published on 55th Anniversary of the Department on 8th September 2016.

Aim: The Journal is focused on the development of the knowledge of Social sciences by providing an intellectual platform for the national and international scholars to showcase their research work. It includes analytical review of researches, case studies, theoretical articles pertaining to social sciences research, evaluation studies and diverse research studies that contribute to the discipline of social sciences.

Topics covered : The journal publishes research papers in the fields such as anthropology, business studies, communication studies, criminology, cross-cultural studies, development studies, economics, education, geography, history, information science, international relations, law, linguistics, library science, media studies, methodology, philosophy, political science, population Studies, psychology, public administration, sociology, religious studies, women studies and many more.

Publication Frequency: It is biannually as well as bilingual published journal. Paper is immediately published after getting approval from reviewers. Author can see the current status (submission is under process, under review, accepted etc.) of paper anytime on website.
