The Department of Political Science has played an important role in the University's overall development, giving rise to the Departments of International Relations, Sociology and Public Administration. Distinguished faculty over the decades have included Professor Ilyas Ahmed, Prof. Dr. Manzooruddin Ahmed and Prof. Dr. Arshad S. Karim, among others.

Overview & History

Department of Political Science was established in 1952. It has since then initiated programs for the award of research degrees of M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Political Science and its allied fields.

The Department of Political Science has been playing an important role in the overall development of the University. It has been the mother of the Departments of International Relations, Sociology and Public Administration. At present the department is second in the Faculty of Arts, after Economics, in terms of the number of students enrolled.

The Department has, since its inception, very qualified and competent persons in its faculty. Professor (Late) Ilyas Ahmed, Professor Dr. M. Aziz Ahmed; Prof. Dr. Manzooruddin Ahmed, Professor Dr. Syed Adil Hussian, Professor (late) C.A Salahuddin, Professor (Late) Waheedud-din Kadri, Professor (Late) Syed Sadique Hussain, Prof. (Late) Dr. Syed Shahid Ali Rizvi, Prof. (Late) Dr. S. Rizwan Ali Rizvi, Prof. Dr. Arshad S. Karim, Prof. Nihal Hasan Rizvi, Prof. Dr. Tanveer Khalid and Dr. Hafiz M. Abdullah Qadri have served the Department with distinction.

Teaching and Assessment

Besides regular lectures delivered in both English and Urdu by the faculty the students participate in Seminars/ workshops and group discussions. Special lectures by visiting faculty are also attended by students compulsorily.

(Two Years Evening Program) 

Introduction

The Department of Political Science is one of the oldest and largest departments of the University of Karachi. It was established in 1951 and has been offering Bachelors, Master, M.Phil, M.S and Ph.D. programs. Later, departments of International Relations and Public Administration shooted off from the Department of Political Science.  In view of the contemporary trends in governance and public policy matters, the Department of Political Science is offering a two year Master’s program in Public Policy (MPP). Development, management and periodic analysis of public policy is an urgent need of the developing countries .Producing competent and capable manpower for this purpose is the responsibility of the universities. The University of Karachi, as the largest highest seat of learning, has been a leader in the higher education. The Public Policy programm promises a high intellectual level and scholarship for its prospective students

Objectives

The main objective behind MPP program is to prepare professionals in the field of Public Policy to take up the challenges of globalization .It is also aimed to help students to understand the leadership and the managerial tasks that come up in real life situations. MPP graduates have dual advantage over other graduates as they will have an understanding of the administrative issues of public sector as well as the ways and means to tackle the administrative problems. The program aims at providing career opportunities for the students by:

  • Preparing students for administrative careers in public sector and private organizations with qualities of leadership.
  • Imparting both the theoretical and practical knowledge of the related fields.
  • Enhancing the decision making power of the students.
  • Making the students comprehend environmental issues  and development strategies
  • Equipping the students with the analytical ability to understand the current financial & administrative issues.

Facilities

The department has a fully functional Seminar Library with over 2000 books. Most of the books are recent publications in the subject in both English and Urdu. The library also offers dailies, periodicals and research journals for reading to its students. Moreover, there is a well equipped specialized Library with latest books and periodicals in all the areas relevant to Public Policy.  The Library maintains a reference section which has a reasonable collection of books for ready reference. Thus the library provide a very supportive environment for research activities

Computer Lab

The Computer Lab is equipped with high speed computers, printers and scanner facilities.  These computers are networked with a server and a stand by server.  Audio/Visual aids including multimedia option are used during presentations/ lectures.  Internet access is also available to the students. 

Scholarly Contributions

Research

Research work for M.Phil. / Ph.D. students is regularly conducted by the Faculty Members. Special interest and aptitude of the student as well as velocity of the topic is kept in mind. Topics being completed are political culture in Pakistan, Military and politics in Pakistan, Economic Human rights & their impact on contemporary constitutions, Islamization in  Pakistan , problems of good governance, importance of International Law.
