Department of Physiology
Faculty of Science
The Department of Physiology occupies a prominent place in the modern age of Biosciences, Clinical/Biomedical Sciences and other Applied Biological Sciences. Founded by Prof. Dr. Mahmood Hussain Qazi in 1964, it was the first department outside medical colleges to introduce teaching and research programs in Basic and Experimental Physiology at the graduate and postgraduate levels.
This department is the only institute in the country to have produced M.Phil and Ph.D graduates across various disciplines of Physiology over many years, publishing in journals including PROBE and BioSight, and running applied research programs in ART and Poultry Science.
Careers"The core discipline behind medical research worldwide — physiology is central to health sciences and biomedical innovation."

Introduction
Chairperson: Dr. Lubna Naz (Assoc. Prof.)
The Department of Physiology is an important segment of the Faculty of Science, University of Karachi and occupies a very prominent place in the modern age of Biosciences, Clinical/Biomedical Sciences and other Applied Biological Sciences. This department, founded by Prof. Dr. Mahmood Hussain Qazi in 1964 was the first one outside medical colleges to introduce teaching and research programs in Basic and Experimental Physiology at the graduate and postgraduate levels. This department is the only institute in the country which has produced M.Phils. and Ph.Ds. in various disciplines of Physiology over the past many years.
Career opportunities
Physiology is one of the most important and applied field in health sciences that is entitled even for Nobel Prize. It is the core of all medical research being done all over the world. For a research-oriented mind, studying Physiology is the ideal scenario. Pharmaceutical industry, health monitoring departments, biosynthetic industry, instrumentation in biomedical sciences, health related agencies, population welfare divisions, agriculture, livestock, and poultry industry, laboratory centers, bio cybernetics, occupational therapies, physiotherapy centers, nutritional/ sports centers, radiological institutions, biotechnology, bioinformatics, bioengineering, synthetic biology, health physiology centers, nursing, medical universities, hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, pharmaceutical industry, research and teaching institutions, and a number of other places require physiologists with a variety of disciplines.

Presently, more than 25 research scholars are registered in their M.S, M.Phil / Ph.D. programs in the department.
PROBE
BioSight Journal
About
BioSight journal is a bi-annual research journal published by Department of Physiology, University of Karachi. Journal covers authoritative, topical and original research papers in all fields of biology that interests a wide range of biologists cum physiologist, symbolizing an outstanding development within an explicit field. However, the boundaries of biology have expanded as demarcations between concepts and techniques in the biological sciences become increasingly advanced. The journal covers entire spectrum of biology and the research articles at any level of biological organization ranging from molecular to cellular and organ to global organism level which fall within the broad scope of this Journal. Especially those emphasizing the mechanism and use of the cutting-edge technique are strongly encouraged.
ART
Annual Research Talk (ART)
ART is an annual research showcasing event organized by Department of Physiology, University of Karachi. The event has successfully been executed since 2017 by the departmental Seminar Committee.
The primary objective of ART is to provide a platform to the young researchers and set a stage to display their research activities at all academic levels from undergraduate to doctorate programs. The format of ART is very dynamic and encompasses various aspects of contemporary research findings too which are shared with students by eminent scholars particularly prevailed health issues in our community and their doable local solutions either preventions or precautions. The postgraduate research fellows who recently awarded M. Phil. and/or Ph.D. also present their ideas and significant findings to inspire the future scholars. Not limited to this, the students are encouraged to prepare thematic posters to enhance their reading, extracting and presenting skills along with dissemination of recent updates on a particular topic.
The thematic and original research contributions are then gone through a blind assessment by a jury and shields & certificates are presented to three best posters under different categories of academic levels as token of appreciation.
The event welcomes all biosciences students and usually contributions are made by scholars of other students within university or from other universities.
