Physics, the oldest discipline of natural science, deals with matter and energy in their most diversified forms. Technological advances in all areas of human endeavour are based on the understanding of physical laws of nature. The Department of Physics is one of the earliest departments of the University of Karachi, established in 1952 with Professor Dr. Mujtaba Karim as founding Chairman.

Since its inception, the department has played an important role in the development of Science and Technology in the country, earning a strong reputation for producing capable Physics graduates. The department maintains a diverse permanent faculty of qualified teachers and researchers devoted to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses to B.Sc. (Honors), M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. students.

Faculty members are committed to making their contributions visible nationally and internationally through teaching, research and scholarly publication in theoretical and experimental Physics.

Physics, from primordial era to fundamental and composite consciousness, is the oldest discipline of natural science dealing with matter and energy in their most diversified forms. Technological advances in all areas of human endeavor are based on the understanding of physical laws of nature that human kind has strived for right from the beginning. Physics has and will continue to play the fundamental role in the industrial and social development of human society. This has been a continuous motivation for humans to explore hidden mysteries in nature and find solutions to problems.
Department of Physics is one of the earliest departments of university of Karachi, established in 1952 with Professor Dr. Mujtaba Karim as founder Chairman. Since its inception, department is playing an important role in the development of Science and Technology in the country and has earned a good reputation of producing good graduates in the Physics. Department has a diverse permanent faculty of qualified teachers and researchers fully devoted in teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses to B.Sc. (Honors), M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. students. Faculty is committed for making their contributions visible both nationally and internationally through teaching, research and writing scholarly articles in theoretical and experimental Physics.

Degree Offerings

Programs

Department of Physics offer admission in following degree programs

B.Sc. (Honors)

It is a three-year, six semester degree program, after successful completion, students enrolled in the program receive a three years B.Sc. (Honors) degree. Pre-requisite for admission in B.Sc. (Honors) 1st year is any one of the following:

H.S.C./Intermediate or
GCE A-Level (Physics and Mathematics) or
DAE (Electronics, Mechanical, Electrical, Radio, T.V) limited number of seats

M.Sc. (Final)

It is a one-year, two semester degree program, after successful completion, students enrolled in the program receive one-year M.Sc. degree. Pre-requisite for continuation to M.Sc. (Final) is a successful completion of B.Sc. (Honors) degree in Physics.

M.Sc. (Previous)

It is a two-year, four semester degree program, after successful completion, students enrolled in the program receive two-year M.Sc. degree. Pre-requisite for admission in M.Sc. (Previous) is B.Sc. (Pass) with Physics and Mathematics.

M.Phil.

A two-year, four semester degree program, with first two semester course work (24 Credit hours) as pre-requisite to start research work of two semesters (6 Credit hours). Pre-requisite for admission in M.Phil. is M.Sc. Physics degree and all together sixteen years of education.

Ph.D.

A three-year, six semester degree program. Compulsory 18 credit hours course work and research thesis.

Facilities

Teaching Laboratories

Four teaching laboratories from B.Sc. (Honors) 1st year to M.Sc. (Final) are available. B.Sc. (Honors), M.Sc. (Final) and M.Sc. (Previous) students are required to perform laboratory experiments as compulsory part of their course structure. The laboratories comprise of experiments related to theory courses and give students practical understanding of theory courses.

Seminar Library

Department has a large collection of books (more than 4000), research journals, research reports, monograms, dissertations and magazines in a spacious Seminar Library. A peaceful reading environment is provided to students, research scholars and teachers.

Audio-Visual Room

A large sized room with multimedia and sound system available is reserved for seminar presentations.

Computer Laboratory

A large number of latest computers with latest software are available. Students can use these computers as part of their course work, computational research work for performing calculations, mathematical modeling and graphical simulation and writing research reports and thesis.
