The department is equipped with pharmaceutical technology, pharmaceutical microbiology laboratories and a computer laboratory to support its academic and research needs.

In 1964 the department of pharmacy was part of faculty of sciences and then it has gained the status of faculty in 1973 after which the pharmacy started flourishing in its own. The faculty comprised on four major departments, of which pharmaceutics is one. Presently, more than 1800 regular students are today pursuing their studies leading to the award of Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm-D.), Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm.), Master of Studies (M.S.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees.
Pharmaceutics is one of the major departments of Faculty of Pharmacy University of Karachi, holding about one third of the total pharmacy curricula, indicating the length of areas covered in the field of pharmaceutics that’s why in some countries pharmaceutics refers to as pharmacy itself.
The term pharmaceutics is about science that involves “converting a drug into a medicine”. It starts right after the drug discovery from the natural sources, passing through its physical and chemical characterization, manufacturing, quality control and analysis, its marketing aspects till its use by the patients. Today’s society’s needs has been shifted to a much more prognostic and sophisticated health care services, of it, pharmaceutical care has been of a prominent importance. As per a research, a significant increase in hospital admissions used to be due to the lacking in quality pharmaceutical care in health care institutes. The pharmacist being a drug expert and a very acceptable health care professional becomes an eminent individual to cater with the needs and demands of the modern age health care system.
Department of Pharmaceutics, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Karachi presently, comprises of academic as well as non-academic staff. Most of the teaching staff has doctoral qualification and the rest are pursuing. The department covers 24 courses spread over five years of Pharm. D program in morning and evening shifts. The department is actively involved in pharmaceutical research that covers all aspects of pharmaceutical sciences offering M.Pharm. MS and PhD programs. The department has produced over 69 M. Phil and 11 PhD Scholars in different disciplines of pharmaceutics. The department is sufficiently equipped with all the needs and nodes that are of pivotal importance; here we have technology, pharmaceutical microbiology laboratories and computer laboratory to cope with the educational needs of the academia.

Objectives
The Mission and Policy of the department of pharmaceutics at the Faculty of Pharmacy is based on one policy which is to provide the pharmaceutical care, through quality education and scientific research, for the wellbeing of the humanity. Pharmaceutics has been unarguably the most diverse of all the subject areas covered in pharmaceutical sciences. Through advanced tools and techniques, education and consultancy, quality will be built in the pharmacy profession and the professionals so as to serve the different aspects of health care system whether it is academia, pharmaceutical industries, hospital or the community. We know the role of a pharmacist serving the community and we will always be looking forward to construct his persona in order to cope with the updated need of the trade. We are very sentient about our responsibility and will strive despite the impedances. May the almighty Allah help us in bringing the profession to a rise.

Laboratories
For Undergraduate studies
In the department of pharmaceutics here we have four laboratories dedicated for the undergraduate students to conduct the practical aspects of the discipline. The laboratories are reinforced by skilled support staff who are technically qualified for carrying out the on and practice. Following aspects are covered by laboratories:

For Postgraduate studies
There is a separate laboratory allocated for post graduate studies where in the master and doctoral level researches are conducted. The laboratories are sufficiently equipment with research recommended equipments to carry out research in Formulation development, Pharmacokinetics, Pharmaceutical Microbiology, physical pharmacy etc.
Computer Laboratory
As per the needs and requirements of current educational scenario, the under graduate and graduate students are acquainted with sufficient knowledge of computer sciences, hence there is a provision of a computer laboratory equipped with new and updated computer systems where the under graduate and graduate students practices and enhances their computer skills.
Technically aided Teaching
To cope with the advancements in the teaching skills there are availability of Multimedia projectors, overhead projectors and a special seminar room is separately dedicated in the research institute.
Seminar Library
In the faculty of pharmacy we are having a capacious and equipped library staffed with qualified personnel to cater with the need of a educational resources and material. The seminar library is subscribed with many international scientific journals and magazines. Most of the references books are made available for this purpose.
