Chemistry
Department of Chemistry
Faculty of Science
One of the oldest departments of the University of Karachi, well equipped with skilled faculty and modern laboratories, the Department of Chemistry helps students understand the origin of life and applications of chemical science.
Semester System
Two semesters of approximately 16 weeks each, with midterm/makeup, terminal and lab assessment.
Applied Focus
Curriculum bridges physics, biology, engineering and applied sciences.
Industry-Ready
Graduates prepared for textile, pharmaceutical, oil refining and food industries.
Chemistry is a central science that helps in understanding the origin of life and offers ways to use non-living things for the comfort of life. Chemical orientation cannot be imparted in isolation — it is developed through a combination of physics and biology on one hand, and engineering and applied sciences on the other.
CareersCareer Opportunities
A degree in chemistry opens a wide choice of employment opportunities, especially in the textile and pharmaceutical industry, clinical laboratories, oil refineries, chemical industry, paint industry, cement industry, beverages and food product industry, analytical and instrumental services agencies, and the polymer industry.

Introduction
Chairperson: Prof. Dr. Nasreen Fatima
Chemistry is a central science which helps in understanding the origin of life and suggest ways to use non-living things for giving comfort to life. Chemical orientation cannot be imparted in isolation and has to be developed through a cocktail of physics and biology on one hand and engineering and applied sciences on the other. The Department of Chemistry, University of Karachi is well equipped for pursuing this goal having skilled and proficient faculty, well equipped laboratories and other infrastructure. This department is one of the oldest departments of University of Karachi.
Teaching and assessment
Teaching is done while following the semester system. An academic year is divided into two semesters of approximately 16 weeks duration. Assessment includes midterm/ makeup, terminal and lab / Assignment.
Career Opportunities

Research
In recent years many candidates of this department have completed M.Phil and Ph.D and most of them are now working in renowned and esteemed institutions and industries in all over the world. Every year the researchers of the department publish many research papers and books. Most of our faculty members hold Ph.D degrees. Many of our teachers and students have presented their research in international conferences/ seminars and most of them are pursuing vigorous research programs within the limited resources.
The department has awarded thousands of B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc degrees. Besides these, over hundred research scholars have completed their M.Phil and Ph.D degrees. Furthermore, Department of Chemistry is also supervising B.Sc. (Pass) degree program at many different colleges in the city, which are affiliated with University of Karachi.
Facilities
The seminar library has a stock of about 10,000 books and research journals on various fields of chemistry. The Department of Chemistry is equipped with many modern instruments for training of students for challenging careers and research. These include, pH/Ion meters, conductometers, polarimeters, refractometers, potentio-meters, electrochemical analyzers, HPLC, atomic absorption spectrometers, UV-Visible spectrophotometers, FTIR Spectrometers, Guoy Balance for magnetic susceptibility measurements, flame photometers, computers, deionizers, analytical balances, ovens, furnaces, centrifuges as well as a substantial stock of glassware and chemicals. A modern instrument laboratory has been furnished to house the new atomic absorption spectrometer, HPLC, GC, GC-MS nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer as well as some other modern instruments. The department of chemistry has internet facility in almost every room/lab class rooms.
