Chemical Engineering arose from the need to apply physical, chemical, and engineering principles to the processing of such varied products such as fuels, drugs, foods, plastics, metals ,microelectronics, and basic chemicals. Undergraduate preparation for this field is therefore especially broad and balanced, drawing on chemistry, mathematics, physics etc. The graduates of a chemical engineering program are well prepared not only for industrial practice but also for graduate work in such diverse fields as biochemical, biomedical,or nuclear engineering; chemistry; environmental or energy studies; materials science; semiconductors, medicine; business administration; and law. Indeed, we seek to educate the future leaders of our technological society. Many chemical Engineers serve in the traditional chemical process industries of petroleum, natural gas, chemicals, paper, and plastics. Some develop new products or through research, while others carry out the pilot studies and design work to bring innovations from the laboratory into manufacturing operations. Many are engaged in the operation and management of process plants. Others are in marketing, developing new applications for, or solving problems arising from, the use of these products. Often a chemical engineer moves from one of these functions to the next as an idea develops-into a full-scale production facility. Chemical engineers have long aided in energy and materials production from oil, gas, coal, and high-energy chemicals. They are involved in the research, development, and production of energy from alternative energy resources. A chemical engineer's career path is varied and rewarding, allowing individual talents to grow and be fully utilized.
Teaching and Assessment
The course consists of class room lectures plus laboratory practical. The courses are divided into 3 credit hours (without practical) and 4 credit hours (with practical). Four credit hours courses consist of 100 marks for theory and 50 marks for practical.
Career Opportunities
There exists a wide scope of employment opportunities for Chemical Engineers from International companies to small locally based industries, from Petro-chemicals to wet processing of Textiles. Many Chemical Engineers work as consultant, managing their own companies even.

Inter Science with Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics with at least 60% marks. Admission to be given on the basis of marks obtained in Inter-Science and test each having equal weightage.

LABORATORIES AND RESEARCH FACILITIES
The department is equipped with appropriate number of laboratories and workshop facilities. Practical are conducted as per prescribed course outline. Efforts to strengthen the laboratories are being made. Approval for Workshop and Engineering Laboratories building has been given and construction would soon begin. A development plan has been submitted for building, equipments and faculty development to Higher Education Commission.
SEMINAR LIBRARY
There is a departmental Seminar Library, which contains most of the latest text and reference books on the related subjects.

In addition to academics , the department believes in close co-ordination with the industries. Therefore, various field trips are arranged for the students, which increase their vision. Lectures / Seminars based on the latest development in the Engineering field are also arranged, which provides updated Chemical Engineering knowledge to our students.

| Dr. Faizan Raza Having over 12 years of industrial, research and academic experience Dr. Faizan Raza currently working as associate professor at Chemical Engineering department NED University of Engineering & Technology. He did his Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) from department of Chemical Engineering University of Karachi in Dec 2010. Later he was awarded HEC HRDI UESTP scholarship for masters leading to PhD in 2012 for 5 years. He did his PhD from Fusion Chemical Engineering department at Hanyang University (QS world ranked 50-100 in chemical engineering) South Korea under supervision of Prof. Kim, Jong Ho. His research is related to semiconductor nanomaterials and its energy applications. He is also working in process system engineering applications. |

Greetings from my side,
My name is Sidra Sikandar. I am an Alumni of Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Karachi. I graduated in 2014, at that time the Department was under development, but our hopes and education was elevating. After graduation I chose research path as my curiosity to experiment and learn could be fulfilled in that way. I worked for 3 years on different topics which could not have been possible if I do not have a strong academic background in my Bachelor’s. I applied for various scholarships as I wanted to do my higher studies abroad. I have received women in STEM 30% scholarship and I moved to Germany for my Masters. I am currently studying MS in Hydro sciences and Engineering.
It has been a great experience for me so far. It helped me to learn and grow both personally and professionally and I hope to keep learning and be at a stage to contribute back to the community.
Engr. Khizra Abdul Wadood
My name is Khizra Abdul Wadood. In 2015, I graduated with a B.E. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Karachi, and then I got a master's degree in Engineering Management from NED University of Engineering & Technology (2017).
I have a proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a categorically agile and professional environment. I have concrete experience in working for analytical laboratories and quality assurance for consumer products. Along with this, I have successfully completed several process simulation and design projects as well. Remarkably improved project quality, workflow, customer satisfaction and bottom-line results during my job. In addition, I am a great enthusiast of data science and machine learning applications in the process and production industries.
Currently, I am enrolled in an engineering doctorate from at the University of Birmingham. My research project is in collaboration with a pharmaceutical company. The project is about the simulation and modelling of powder dispersion and dissolution processes using open-source applications.
The aim of the project is to develop a modelling approach for particle wetting and dissolution processes that can be applied to de-risk design, scale-up and technology transfer of mixing processes. Typical powders in question have varying degrees of solubility, wettability, density, size distribution etc. In many cases, the materials will be in limited supply and/or extremely expensive with little known behaviour beyond bench scale. Furthermore, since the “product” is a formulation there may be synergies (positive and negative) to consider in the sequence and rates of addition. Trial and error scale-up is potentially wasteful hence the need to develop an expert predictive model that identifies key parameters to measure and, from these measurements, the best guess of the suitable processes and conditions. This will necessarily be a multiscale approach which will couple fluid and impeller flow dynamics with particle-fluid interactions at the particle scale.

INDUSTRY – ACADEMIC COLLABORATION
Financial Support from Pakistan Petroleum Limited:
Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) generously funded PKR 13.05 million to build and equip PPL Laboratory Block at the Chemical Engineering Department, University of Karachi that helped the Department in securing Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) accreditation. The Department greatly appreciates timely grant by PPL.
Industrial Visit / Internship/Design Projects:
Industrial visits for all bathes is regular practice of the Department. Third /final year students, during vacations, have to undertake industrial internship to get hands on practical experience. Final year Design Projects are prepared in consultation with national and multinational organizations.
