The Department of Arabic, University of Karachi, was established in 1955. Since its inception the Department has enjoyed the patronage of renowned scholars of international repute, starting under the headship of Professor Allama Abdul Aziz Memon.
The carefully chosen syllabus offers an excellent study of ancient and contemporary Arabic Literature, Language and Linguistics. Besides academic activities, curricular and co-curricular activities — extension lectures, debates, study tours and other functions — help develop students' abilities and talent. At present, 42 courses in Arabic Literature, Language and Linguistics are taught, including computer skills and research methodology.
Teaching combines lectures, extensive discussion and group work in the classroom, with student performance assessed through end-of-semester examinations.

Introduction

The Department of Arabic, University of Karachi, was established in 1955. Since its inception, the Department is enjoying the patronage of renowned scholars of international repute. From the outset, the Department started functioning under the auspicious headship of the renowned scholar Professor Allama Abdul Aziz Memon Highly qualified faculty members having vast experience enjoying good reputation are taking part in dispersal education.
The cautiously chosen syllabus considering the demands of the student and the existing period, offers excellent study of the ancient times and the contemporary era. It is indeed a confluence of ancient and modern Arabic Literature, Language and Linguistics. Besides academic activities, curricular and co-curricular activities are also stressed like extension lectures, debates, study tours, picnics and other functions to reveal, enhance and polish the abilities and talent of the students.
At present forty two (42) courses of Arabic Literature, Language and Linguistics are taught including computer and research methodology.
Teaching & Assessment
Teaching combines lectures, extensive lectures and group discussions in the classroom. Student’s performance is assessed by end-of-semester examination.

The Department offers a conducive environment equipped with latest technology. It has a well-stocked Seminar Library containing books on almost all relevant subjects, a state-of-the-art Computer Lab with internet facility and modern audiovisual aids.

The Department started publishing of its own Research journal Quarterly. The journal is titled AL-NAKHLAH. Scholars are invited to for their valuable contributions and academic participation

Department has an excellent Linguistic Computer Laboratory and AudioVisual facility to adopt the modern method of teaching. The facility help in creating the natural environment of Arabic language by watching Arab TV channels and by listening to VIDEO cassettes of Arabic stories and Dramas.
