Established in 1971 and moved to its new building in 1987, the department's courses are designed around Pakistan's chemical industries — fertilizers, refineries, cement, sugar, polymers, pharmaceutics and textiles.

Chemical Industry Focus

Curricula built around fertilizers, refineries, cement, sugar, polymers and textiles.

Engineering Fundamentals

Unit operations, unit processes, thermodynamics, reaction and design engineering.

Four-Year B.S.

Two semesters per year with a strong laboratory and applied-industry component.

Special emphasis is placed on the important chemical industries of Pakistan, with due consideration given to chemical engineering fundamentals — unit operations, unit processes, quality control and instrumentation, thermodynamics, reaction engineering, design engineering, materials engineering, maintenance and environmental engineering — so graduates are equipped to meet the needs of the country's chemical industries.

Program Structure

Medium of instruction is English. The four-year B.S. program runs two semesters each year; assessment comprises 30 marks makeup/midterm, 50 marks terminal and 20 marks for lab/assignment work.

The department of Applied Chemistry was established in 1971 and was shifted to its new building in 1987. The courses have been designed keeping in view the need of the chemical industries of Pakistan and with due consideration of courses of foreign and local Universities offering similar program. Special emphasis has been put on important chemical industries of Pakistan, for instance, fertilizers, refineries, cement, sugar, polymers, pharmaceutics, textiles, etc. Due consideration has been given to important aspects of chemical engineering like unit operations, unit processes, quality control & instrumentation, thermodynamics reaction engineering, design engineering, materials engineering, maintenance and environmental engineering, etc. Hence it is hoped that the graduates of this department will meet the needs of the chemical industries of Pakistan.

Teaching and Assessment

Vision & Mission

Objectives


The aims of the program are to impact theoretical and technical knowledge applicable to various industries e.g. Textile, Petrochemicals, Heavy Chemical Industries, Food, Metallurgy etc. The courses are accordingly designed to provide:

  • Good theoretical background in Chemistry with emphasis on thermodynamics and kinetics.
  • Comprehensive study of various aspects of Chemical Engineering and some related engineering subjects are also included.
  • Detailed study of major industries.
  • A new course in industry oriented Computer Science has been introduced.
  • A workshop is to be established where students would get training on lathe, drill machine, glass blowing and unit operations etc.
