Foundation studies

Prior to specialization all students must undergo training in the one-year foundation course which introduces students to a wide range of basic skills. Through projects of growing complexity, students are guided towards their chosen area of specialization.

The objective of this compulsory preparatory course is to provide the basic skills and knowledge necessary to engage productively in the subsequent years of training in all the Specialization courses that the Dept. of Visual Studies has to offer.

The practical subjects introduced in the 1st year will be;

• Materials & Processes

Contextual studies

• History of Cultures
• History of Ideas
• Islamic Art & Civilization
• Modes of Cultural Expressions

These courses are compulsory for all students and are taught throughout their first six semesters.

Four compulsory University courses are to be completed in the first four semesters:

• Pakistan Studies
• Islamic Studies

Specialization

Applications can be made for one of the following fields of specialization:

Architecture

The Architecture course seeks to produce architects capable of design solutions in the context of social and technical research and innovation.

The course consists of architectural theory and history; building related technologies, services and materials; communication skills; and the application of these in studio practices. The program acknowledges green architecture and the digital revolution, introducing computer-aided design in the second year of the course.

Fine Art

Fine Art is an integrated programme that encourages students to explore the expressive qualities of a variety of media including painting sculpture, miniature painting, printmaking, computer graphics, photography and film.  Students are encouraged to use a wide range of media, materials and processes. Drawing is a key discipline. Art History and Art Theory supplement concept development.

Islamic Art

The Islamic Art course establishes a practical-cum- theoretical Islamic Arts curriculum, based on surviving practices throughout the Islamic world.

The underlying philosophy of this course acknowledges Islamic Art as a vibrant subject of great relevance to the Muslim world. Khattati, Naqqashi, Bookbinding, Geometric patterns and their application in Architecture, Design, Textiles, Metalwork, Ceramics, Miniature painting and the arts of the book are introduced.

Art History

The Art History course encourages the student to look critically at the history of Art and Ideas. Contemporary South Asian and global art practices, the “Grand Narratives” of art history are studied in depth, and re-examined through the post-colonial perspective of cultural studies.  Tutorials on related areas of literature, philosophy, music, film and the performing arts are incorporated.

Students are expected to present a substantial ‘research paper’ at the end of the course. This is a theory course; however, students supplement their studies with a studio course of their choice.

Design & Media Arts

Students can choose to major in Graphic Design or Media Arts. Graphic Design students focus on advertising design, typography, print technology, information graphics, editorial design, computer graphics, packaging and illustration. Media Arts prepares students for film and television, animation, and script writing.

Minors in Illustration or photography are available for students of either discipline.

Industrial Design

Industrial Design is an inter-disciplinary profession that interfaces between art and technology to conceive design and develop products for the home, work place and public amenities.

The Industrial Design program facilitates a wide range of learning experiences including imaginative speculation on design solutions; hands-on practical fabrication of drawings, 3D models and computer representation of design ideas; and the articulation of theoretical frameworks for understanding design ideas within a historical and cultural context.

Textile Design

 

The course aims to prepare design students for a role in the textile industry, both for clothing and furnishing textiles and accessories.

Professional, technical and design skills are encouraged for a range of printed, woven, knitted and embroidered textile products. Block and screen-printing, transfer processes, dyeing, experience of fabric and weaving on looms.

Internships and workshops are arranged as an essential part of the curriculum. Students are required to engage in detailed research of traditional and modern textile processes.

The Ceramics & Glass course offers; pottery, slab building, mould-making, glazing and firing techniques, glass blowing and glass moulding, suitable for studio practice. History of Ceramics and Glass supplement practical experience.
