Prof. Dr. Tariq Masood Ali Khan is the Director of the Institute. He joined University of Karachi as a Professor in May, 2008. Dr. Khan got Ph.D. degree in 1991 from Department of Meteorology and Oceanography, University of the Philippines, a regional centre of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for Asia and Pacific region. Dr. Khan joined National Institute of Oceanography in 1991 as a physical oceanographer and meteorologist, Dr. Khan was also involved in the national program of Tsunami Early Warning System for Pakistan and tide gauge installtion along Pakistan coast. Dr. Khan participated in many national and International deep sea cruises including Expedition to Antarctica. Dr. Khan was deputed to SAARC Meteorological Research Centre (SMRC), Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1998.



Professor Dr. Moazzam Ali Khan is currently Registrar , University of Karachi. He has joined the Institute in 1990 and serving in various capacities since last 25 years and the now became the senior most faculty of the Institute. He was the longest serving Director of the Institute.

He has done his Ph.D on low cost wastewater treatment technology and has considerable experience on recycling and reuse of wastewater specially in water scarce areas. Currently he has been engaged in working on climate change and security problems in the region.

He has organized many national and international seminars, workshops and lectures, many of these have been sponsored by the World Health Organization. He is also local tutor of CLIMA; A project of the European Commission on global climate change. Recently he has  completed a collaborative project through DelPHE in which University of Oxford and Dhaka University are the collaborating partners. He is also the founder member of SANSaC (South Asian Network on Security and Climate Change) through which he is conducting a project on climate change and security issues in Pakistan funded by International Alert UK. He has authored  more than eighty research papers which have been published in national and international journals. He has traveled extensively and has presented his research findings in many international forums.




Prof. Dr Omm-e-Hany, has joined the Institute in 2001. She has done her PhD in Microbiology from University of Karachi. Her research during past years has focused on biological and biochemical effects of environmental contaminants. Her key areas of study included environmental issues pertaining to public health and hygiene. Presently she is working on the biodegradation of toxic pollutants having significant impact on environment.



Dr. Seema Jilani holds a PhD degree in the subject of Environmental Science from University of Karachi, Pakistan and ME in Environmental Science & Technology from UNESCO-IHE, Delft, The Netherlands. She has been serving in various faculty positions for last 25 years. She has authored two books and several publications to her credit in national and international research journals. She is HEC approved PhD supervisor. Her areas of interest are environmental biotechnology, bioremediation of pesticide waste, water & wastewater pollution control technology and municipal solid waste composting.


Dr. Zafar Iqbal Shams has joined the Institute as Assistant Professor in May, 2010. He has also served the Institute as Research Fellow (Air Pollution) from 1985 to 1988. He completed his Ph.D. in Environmental Science in 1993 under the Fellowship Programme sponsored by Karachi Development Authority. This is the first Ph.D degree in Environmental Science awarded by any university in Pakistan.
Earlier in 1985, he completed his M.Sc. in Botany with specialization in Plant Ecology from the Department of Botany. He has published various research as well as popular articles in the national and international periodicals on environmental issues. He has wide experience of teaching in the colleges of Government of Sindh.




Ms. Suraiya Jabeen, Assistant Professor in the Institute, has done Masters in Environmental Science from the Karachi University. She is doing esearch on biodegradation    of hazardous wastes of industries. She has done professional courses on Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) and Occupational Health and Safety Management system (ISO 18001) certified by International Register of certified Auditor (IRCA).



Dr. Waqar Ahmed is Assistant Professor in the Institute. He has done his Masters and PhD in Environmental Studies on ecology of mangroves. His field of expertise is ecology of mangroves, coastal pollution, wildlife, air pollution and noise. He has completed various professional training courses in the country and abroad. Before joining the Institute, he served in IUCN The World Conservation Union.



Ms Noor Fatima has done Masters from the Institute of Environmental Studies, University of Karachi in 2008. She has joined this Institute as a lecturer in 2012 and currently enrolled at M.Phil/PhD program in the University of Karachi. Since then she has been involved in several research projects related to environmental microbiology and waste management. She has also served as an Environmental Scientist (2008-2012) in Environmental Management Consultants (EMC). Her field of interest is environmental biotechnology, environmental management and clean development mechanism.    

Aamir Alamgir a graduate of Institute of Environmental Studies University of Karachi joined the institute as full time cooperative teacher in 2009.  Recently he has been awarded Ph. D degree on climate change issues. He has developed his vast expertise in the field of climate change . Dr. Aamir also completed DelPHE British Council  Project on Unprotected coastal sites of high ecological values in Pakistan and Bangladesh”as a Research Associate. His skills on the subject were recognized by the research team of International Alert, United Kingdom who selected  him to work as a Research Officer on a project entitled “Strengthening the Response to Climate Variability in Fragile States”. Dr Aamir is highly  ambitious and fuelled with determination and motivation. Becoming a  faculty of the Institute he has given many teaching assignments  to teach post graduate students. He has also developed his expertise on contemporary environmental issues of the country.

Syed Ahmed Shah is a Research Officer in the Institute. He has passed MSc. Environmental Studies from University of Karachi in 2009. His field of interest is coastal ecosystems.    8

HEC Eminent Professor

Prof. Dr. S. Shahid Shaukat, Ex Chairman, Department of Botany, University of Karachi, has joined the Institute in September 2008. Currently he is an Adjunct Professor in the Institute. He did his PhD from the University Western Ontario, Canada in Statistical Ecology. Additionally, he holds a masters degree in Forestry from the University of Wales, UK.
He has authored about 300 research papers in Journals of international repute and is an author of 6 books mostly on ecology and biostatistics.
