The Center of Excellence in Marine Biology was established as Department of Marine Biology in 1969. In 1973, it was given the status of Institute of Marine Biology. Later in 1975 the Federal Government elevated its status as Center of Excellence in Marine Biology under the Center of Excellence Act of 1974. The Center financially supported by Ministry of Education through the University Grants Commission. It is administered by Board of Governors whose Chairman is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Karachi. The Director is the executive and administrative head of the Center. The board of Advance Studies & Research and the Academic Council of the University of Karachi approves the academic programs of the Center. The Degrees are awarded by the University of Karachi. The Center of Excellence in Marine Biology is the only institution in Pakistan, Which offer degrees in Marine Biology at M. Phil. and Ph. D. level. This Center has so far Produce 60 M. Phil. 7 Ph. D degrees. Presently 33 M. Phil. and 9 Ph. D. students are enrolled at the Center. Important disciplines of studies including Fisheries, aquaculture (fish & crab) Environment studies, Plankton (Phyto and Zooplankton), Malacology etc.

International agencies like UNESCO, WWF, Pakistan Science Foundation, University Grants Commission, Environmental Research and Wild Life development, National Agriculture Research Council are funding Research Projects at the Center. About 300 Research papers have been published by faculty staff whish appeared in local and International journals. Center is regularly publishing the Journal of Marine Biology and News bulletin twice in a year.
