Youm - e - Jamia 'Golden Jubilee of the present campus' celebrated - 18/01/10

 

University of Karachi, Pakistan’s great university began its journey in 1951. On 18th January 1960, the university was shifted to the outskirts of the city at KDA scheme no 24, the then country club road (now university road) in the newly constructed campus.

A procession of faculty, along with students, employees, and the respected invitees of the university headed by Vice Chancellor Mr. Basheer Ahmed Hashmi came through the place which is now known as the Silver Jubilee gate. The invitees also included respected Moulana Ehtisham-ul-haq Thanvi and numerous Hufaaz who all were reciting The Holy Quran while walking through that gate. This procession ended at the convocation ground adjacent to the present Administration Block. This day later on was known as YOM E JAMIA and after seventeen years a monument was built on the central entrance of the university by the name of THE SILVER JUBILEE GATE.


This day has been celebrated by the loyal alumni of the university on numerous occasions. This year was no exception.

Speaker, Sindh Assembly, Nisar Khuhro put forward a proposal for setting up a campus of the University of Karachi (KU) in interior Sindh in order to provide the rural students of the province access to quality education. Khuhro, who is also an alumnus of the university, said that he is proud to be a student of the KU which is the number one university in the country.

Former chairman of the department of Philosophy, KU, Dr Manzoor Ahmed, first woman PhD in Physics, Dr Aquila Islam and writer and columnist Amar Jalil were some of the distinguished alumni who were present on the occasion.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui announced that the university would hold a grand convention in mid 2010. “An endowment fund will be established with help of the Friends of the University. We will try to contact all the alumni to take part in the progress of their alma mater,” he said.
