The inauguration ceremony of the Seminar and Digital Library of UBIT, Department of Computer Science, University of Karachi was held at the Seminar Hall of DCS-UBIT on Saturday, March 28, 2009. On the occasion, Vice Chancellor, University of Karachi, Prof. Dr. Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, emphasized on the importance of digital libraries and the role they play in research and development activities at the university. He praised the efforts of Dr. Aqil Burney and his team in providing the facility of the digital library at the department. He was of the view that many sponsors have funded in the making of UBIT and major chunk of funds have been provided by the University of Karachi and the Higher Education Commission. He advised the department to establish a business approach towards software development so that the department could meet its own recurring expenditure. More than 300 books and 42 issues of IEEE research journals were donated by UKIT through courtesy of the Vice Chancellor. He also promised to provide further support to the department. The Chairman of Charter Inspection and Evaluation Committee Dr. S. M. Qureshi was of the view that University of Karachi is one of the largest universities of Pakistan. He emphasized on increasing collaboration among academic institutions as well as growing linkages with the software industry. Meritorious Professor Dr. Aqil Burney, Chairman Department of Computer Science and Director UBIT, in his inaugural speech pointed out that libraries are essential part of academic institutions. Digital libraries are order of the day and in future, they will be used more frequently as an essential library service. He said that the department has arranged Internet access to digital resources of CS/IT provided by professional organizations such as IEEE and ACM. Although, at present this facility will be provided to 30 to 50 students at a time but it will be improved as time progresses. He told that up till now about 110 million rupees have been spent on the DCS/UBIT out of which more than 51 Million Rupees have been provided by the university. The Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Akhlaq Ahmed praised the setup of a strong infrastructure of computing in the university through the Main Communication Network.
