Seminar at department of IR

“The ongoing electoral process in the United States may result in an eventual split in the Democratic Party.” These views were expressed by Ambassador (Retd) Najmus Saqib Khan at a seminar on “American Elections 2008” held under the Program on Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, Department of International Relations, University of Karachi on Thursday.

Ambassador Najmus Saqib said that the United States is entering into a unique electioneering campaign; a woman a black man are contesting for the highest office in America . He mentioned the fact that Mr. Barak Hussain Obama is having a distinctively felt influence in the American public. Mr. Barak in his views represents the young, the liberal and the educated professionals; whereas, Ms. Clinton is popular among the working class.

American elections, he elaborated are heavily financed; fund raising does have an impact upon the fate of candidate. Barak Obama has generated twice as much funds as Hilary Clinton has. Mr. Obama has gained more votes in the primaries than Hilary Clinton. On the Republican side, Mr. John McCain has been nominated as a Presidential candidate. John McCain is unambiguously pro War on terror. He is a representative of the neo-conservative elements in the United States . These elections, he continued are a landmark in the history of the United States because a Black Presidential candidate is contesting elections which shows a clear and of racial prejudice.

The major persons, the confront Americans are, health care, social services and economic recession. In case of a deadlock in nominating American Presidential candidate, super delegates, Congressmen, Senators, former Presidents and Governors will have a decisive impact on elections.

Prof. Dr. Akhlaq Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of Karachi said in his Presidential Address that 2008 elections in the United States will have a positive impact upon the world at large because the U.S. intervention in several parts of the world has caused deep-rooted resentment. The new administration in the White House should deal with the phenomenon wisely. Prof. Dr. Moonis Ahmar, Chairman and Program Director of the Department, said in his concluding remarks that the new administration in the United States should reconsider on going foreign policy. He further said that an obsession with security frequently results in greater insecurity in the world, therefore, moral considerations should preferably be not lost sight of.

The Seminar was followed by an interesting question/answer session. Mr. Fahemuddin, faculty member of International Relations Department gave vote of thanks.
