Flood Relief Activities 2010

 

 

Third UOK Flood Relief Team Leaves with 2 truckloads for Northern Sindh Areas - 06/09/10

A delegation of Karachi University Disaster Management Volunteer Corps (UOKDMVC) consisting of teachers, students and non-teaching staff have left for Northern Sindh areas of Thatta, Naushero-Feroze, Sukkur and Khairpur with two truckloads of relief goods – including 12 dry food items, mosquito nets, utensils, buckets, coolers, plastic coated mats (daris) etc for more than 500 flood  affected Families.

The flood relief activities were initiated in different faculties / departments at UOK on the directive of Vice Chancellor University of Karachi Prof. Dr. Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui. 

During the three day visit, the delegation headed by the Pro-Vice Chancellor– Prof. Dr. Shahana Urooj, will not only distribute relief goods among the affectees in collaboration with Khairpur University (SALU) team members but will also participate in collection and processing of clinical samples of patients suffering from gastroenteritis, skin, eye and other infections at the recently established UOK- SALU Diagnostic Microbiology Laboratory Facility for Epidemic Disease Surveillance among the flood affectees.

This project has also been sponsored by Pakistan Society for Microbiology and Pakistan Diagnostic Association. So far UOK has dispatched relief goods – food and medicines worth more than 3.5million rupees for distribution among the flood victims and the next batch consisting of Eid suits for males, females and children along with food etc will be sent on September 8 before Eid.

This is the third batch of relief goods and third visit of UOK student volunteers and teachers to mitigate the sufferings of flood victims. The second batch of 36 UOK volunteers students and non teaching staff from faculty of Science, Pharmacy, Arts, Management and Business Administration, and Islamic Studies returned on last Monday after 2 days flood relief activities and distributing 2 week ration bags to more than 1500 affected families in district Khairpur and Sukkur covering areas of Dargah Mustafa Sharif Long Faqir at Shadi Shaheed IDP Flood relief camp and Govt. Mumtaz Collage Khairpur.

Relief goods bags were also distributed among IDP’s camped between Khairpur University and Shadi Shaheed along 30 km broken road strip as well as at Pakistan Army Camp where most of the IDP’s belonged to Jacobabad and Shikarpur districts.

“At this time of immense grief and suffering, many of our country fellows are in dire need of our help but one thing needs to be remembered that these people are not beggars, we should respect their self esteem while providing them relief. The coordinated efforts of the entire University have resulted in a huge sum of aid that will be delivered to the flood victims by the hands of our student”, said the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui while talking to Karachi University Disaster Management Corps on August 26th 2010.

The VC took round of the council room of Dean Faculty of Science where all the departments and centers delivered their donations that were collected from various places. He asked the enthusiastic volunteers that the Government needs volunteers in the rehabilitation camps which have settled in Karachi, students who are interested in working there can join these camps as well. University is the first educational institution who went to the flood affected areas of Sindh with the first batch of relief.

It is pertinent to mention that, so far, the University volunteers have collected more than three lac rupees in cash whereas more than 700 relief bags have also been prepared, each bag can easily suffice one family. The varsity will soon establish a Microbiological Diagnostic Facility Centre in the affected areas near Sukkur, necessary material for which have already been provided by the Pakistan Microbiological Society.

The students of Department of Chemistry have designed a simple and low cost water purification system which will help in defeating the epidemic diseases which have spread their because of contaminated water and poor conditions of hygiene.

A large number of teachers and students were present and showed immense enthusiasm and courage. They collectively said that the University will keep helping their fellow victims till these miserable people settles in their homes.
