HEC Life Sciences Workshop on Avian Mycoplasmosis (January 22-25 2008)

 

Jointly organized by Department of Microbiology, Institute of Environmental Studies, M.A.H Qadri Biological Research Centre, University of Karachi Pakistan Society for Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology in collaboration with Institute of Environmental Studies and Biological Research Centre is organizing a Workshop on Avian Mycoplasmosis.

Professor Dr.   Fahim-uddin, Dean Faculty of Science, University of Karachi inaugurated the inaugural session.  The programme is being held in view of ever increasing threat to poultry industry in Pakistan due to avian mycoplasmosis. 

In the inaugural address the Dean highlighted the importance of developing poultry industries in a better and hygienic way as poultry industry has a lot of potential in contributing towards further development of the economy. He pointed out that one of the many causes and problems of poultry industry is the quality of feed, which requires an urgent attention by the manufacturers. In his opinion no one is going to help them. We have to depend on our own efforts. We have to develop our own technology to halt pollution, control disease producing microorganisms and hazardous chemicals in the environmental pollution control technologies suitable for specific situation.

Addressing the audience the Dean appreciated the fact that feed manufacturers are aware of their responsibility in this respect. Highlighting the role of  Partner Institutions, Institute of Environmental Studies, Biological Research Centre and the Department of Microbiology of the University the Dean lauded the efforts of heads of the centers and department and the faculty members in organizing such a workshop of national importance.

Professor Dr Aqeel Ahmad, principal organizer of the workshop, introduced the aims and objects of the workshop and its national importance.

Prof. Dr. Shakeel Ahmed Khan Director, Biological Research Centre emphasize the need of such type of events and the role of the academic institutions in tackling such type of  problems of national importance. He highlighted the ongoing research activities in the Biological Sciences in the University.  He further emphasized the need for such workshops and training programme for developing human resource for poultry industries

Dr. Moazzam Ali Khan, Director, Institute of Environmental Studies while welcoming the chief guest, audience and the participants spoke about the past achievements of the Institute in organizing several workshops of national importance related to environment and the enormous health problems caused by the deteriorated environment.

The participants attending the event are from industries, universities, Research Institutes and Research and Development organizations.

In the First technical session two presentations were given. One related to Environmental health and safety issues in poultry industries; second one was on introduction and cultivation of mycoplasma.

There will be altogether 3 technical sessions in which 12 more plenary lectures will be delivered. The speakers are invited from all over the country in the areas of their specific interest related to poultry management.
