The phrase "investigative psychology" taken narrowly is a term referring to methods of identifying key features of a crime and the likely characteristics of the perpetrator . In short, investigative psychology is profiling, and in some instances, profiling is used to summarize the psychological features of persons who may commit a crime, and in this sense, profiling is prediction. However, investigative psychology is only one of several methods in profiling. The words "investigative psychology" usually refer to the method of profiling developed by David Canter in England between 1985 and 1992. This method is sometimes called investigative psychological analysis, facet theory, or geographic profiling.
In the modern era, there is a dearth of information about this particular field in Pakistan. As it is quite obvious that the role of universities is to provide the material (scholars) according to the current needs of the market (society). The present government has also taken bold steps in this regard by introducing the Police Reforms, changing conservative, outdated and British rule intentioned police act of 1861. Now, this is the high time for the universities to get themselves well equipped according to the modern needs.
The Diploma in Investigative Psychology is being introduced with the following aims & objectives:
- To enable the students to get a broader picture of the science of behavior;
- To help them develop social skills in dealing with the community and law-enforcement agencies;
- To orient students to scientific analysis of psychosocial aspects of crime with special reference to Pakistan;
- To prepare students for dealing with the crimes in a more scientifically disciplined way;
- To sensitize the students to psychosocial issues of the Pakistani society;
- To teach how to understand and deal with the varieties of criminals in the perspective of psychological theories that are found in our society in the underlying theme of 'Forensic Psychology'.
