Courses
The Department of Microbiology is the second largest department in the Faculty of Science. Microbiology has always been the subject of choice for students seeking admission to graduate and post-graduate courses in the Faculty of Science, University of Karachi. Students usually face a very tough competition for admission in this Department.
In the last 48 years, the Department has awarded over 5000 B. Sc. (Hons) and M. Sc. Degrees. Besides over 40 research scholars have completed their M. Phil and PhD. Degrees. There are approximately 7 colleges imparting education in Microbiology at B.Sc. (Pass) level whose syllabi and examinations are supervised by this Department. Our qualified faculty members have also helped in establishing, Department of Microbiology at other Universities including Shah Abdul Latif Bhatia University– Khairpur , Sindh University – Jamshoro , Jinnah Women's University - Karachi, Federal Urdu University of Science and Technology – Karachi.
The department provides an excellent environment for graduate and postgraduate education in the basic and applied fields of Microbiology like Bacteriology, Enzymology, Virology and Tissue Culture, Immunology, Clinical Microbiology,
Molecular Biology, Microbial Genetics, Mycology, Parasitology, Food and Agriculture . Biotechnology through its thirty plus academic faculty. . These courses lead to the degrees of B. Sc. (Hons) and M. Sc. in Microbiology. Specialized training leading to the degrees of M. Phil. and Ph. D. is also imparted in the subjects like Molecular Genetics, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Environmental and Industrial Biotechnology etc.
