SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS

To keep the students informed and updated with the latest developments in the modern era, department organizes seminars and workshops for faculty members/students and also allow them to participate in such events both within and out side the university.

In this context, a refresher course was arranged in 1998 for college and department's faculty on new trends of Mathematics. Prof. Dr Nasiruddin Khan – Chairman Department of Mathematics, with the collaboration of UGC at their regional office, also arranged a workshop in 2001. Department of Mathematics will also going to conduct a National level Workshop on Mathematics by the end of this year for which the ground works are in process.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMM

Apart from its primary role as an educational institution, department has also introduce for the first time during 2002-03 the concept of internship for the students who have completed their Master's or waiting for their results. The duration of internships are of three to six months and on completion high performers also offered permanent employment in the respective organization. Presently number of students are on internship with Karachi Stock Exchange, State Bank of Pakistan, State Life Insurance and Shell Pakistan Limited.

INTERNATIONAL/NATIONAL LINKAGE AND COLLABORATION

One of the prominent features of the department is its strong International/National linkages. It provides ample opportunity to work on mutual projects, exchange research data, invite experts to hold lectures, seminars and special courses. In addition, collaboration with Universities also provides research facilities for the faculty members to improve their education. Associate Prof. Dr Sarwar Jahan Abbasi, a faculty member of the department holds the honor to be the Post-doctorate Fellow in Mathematics at International Center of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Italy. Chairman of the department, Prof. Dr Nasiruddin Khan is also an Associate of ICTP. Due to the long and fruitful collaboration with ICTP a huge grant is also expected in the near future from ICTP for the department.

CERTIFICATE DISTRIBUTION CEREMONY

Prof. Dr Zafar Saied Saify, Vice Chancellor, University of Karachi, on April 3, 2003 gave away certificates to the qualified students of the recently concluded I.T. course, conducted by Department of Mathematics in the evening program. The Vice chancellor appreciated all the concerns for the successful completion of the course which certainly helps in up grading the knowledge of the students in the field of Information Technology (I.T.).

OUR SCHOLARS ACHIEVEMENTS

· Associate Prof. Dr Sarwar Jahan Abbasi, a faculty member of the department holds the honor to be the Post-doctorate Fellow in Mathematics at International Center of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Italy. Moreover she was awarded with Rostsca Young Scientists Award in 1990 by UNESCO, in recognition of her outstanding contribution in the field of Mathematics.

· Lecturer, Ms Syeeda Sadia Zia, a faculty member has obtained along with many medals and awards, President Award “AIZAZ-E-SABQAT” for the best performance in M.Sc Examinations from the province of sindh.

· Lecturer, Mr Muhammad Imtiaz, a faculty member secured first class first position in the faculty of sciences in M.Sc (Applied) examination 2000 and also awarded number of medals and shields for his high performance.

FAREWELL OF FACULTY MEMBERS

A meeting of the faculty members was arranged to bid farewell to Prof. Dr Rana Khalid Naeem. After the session of meeting light refreshments were served and Chairman in his address, applauded the contribution of Prof. Dr Rana for upgrading the research work in the area of fluid dynamics, he also appreciate his continuing efforts for extending the research for the students of the department. He hopes that Prof. Dr Rana will continue his assistance for the research students of the department in the future.
