Programs
Department of Genetics offers following programmes.
(i)
M.Sc. in Genetics
(ii) M.Phil. in Genetics
(iii) Ph.D. in Genetics
(i) M.Sc. in Genetics is a two year programme that requires successful qualification of 20 courses of 3 credit hours each (20×3=60 credit hours in all), as detailed in the following:
a. M.Sc. Previous (First Year)
Introduces the student to the fundamentals of genetics. Since this programme accepts students of diverse academic backgrounds, therefore in addition to the fundamentals of genetics, the course prepares the student in cellular and molecular biology. The programme is designed to cater to the application of genetics to a wide spectrum of Pakistan’s economically important biological fields such as agriculture, animal and poultry husbandry. In step with the latest developments in the fields of genetics specialized courses in molecular genetics, cytogenetics and human genetics are also taught. A total of 10 courses of 3 credit hours are taught.
b. M.Sc. Final (Second Year)
Trains the student in advanced fields of Genetics by offering courses such as Genetic Engineering, Developmental Genetics, and Quantitative Genetics. In addition to the aforementioned compulsory courses, a number of courses are offered on elective basis which, in all totals to 10 courses of 3 credit hours each. A select number of meritorious students that have successfully qualified M.Sc. Previous are allowed to opt for research (3 credit hours per semester) in lieu of one optional course per semester. The threshold level (of marks) for eligibility for research is determined each year by the Board of Studies.
(ii) M.Phil. in Genetics
is a research based programmes having a minimum duration of 2 years. Research topics depend upon the on-going research programmes of the faculty members.
(iii) Ph.D. in Genetics
is a research based programmes having a minimum duration of 3½ years. Research topics depend upon the on-going research programmes of the faculty members.
