Admission
Admission to M.Sc. Programme:
Admissions to two year Master’s programme are processed through
Master’s Admission Committee of the university as per prevailing
university Admission Policy. The degree of B.Sc. (or B.S.) with at least
three two-year courses in biological sciences is the minimum pre-requisite
for being eligible for admission in M.Sc. Previous as detailed below:
The Admission Policy is announced in October by the Academic Council at which time the prospective student may contact the department. The M.Sc. programme is of two years duration irrespective of fact whether the student graduated with a B.Sc. (Pass) or B.Sc. (Honours) degree. First semester starts on the 1st working day of January every year.
Admission to M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programmes: M.Phil. and Ph.D. admissions are processed through the Board of Advanced Studies and Research (BASR). Prior to application for admission it is required that the prospective student develop a working understanding with a faculty member and obtain his/her consent to supervise the student informally. The applicant candidate must clear an entry test conducted by the university on the pattern of GRE (Graduate Record Examination). A synopsis of research is written under the guidance of the supervising faculty member and submitted to the BASR. This is followed by an interview by a body, comprising of senior most faculty members of the department and the Dean, Faulty of Science. The whole process may take few months before the student is formally enrolled. Therefore prospective students are advised to plan well ahead in time. Students are usually admitted to M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes every year in the months of October and March or as per prevailing admission policy. Prior to admission the prospective student is advised to contact faculty members directly and discuss their research goals. If an understanding develops between the teacher and the prospective student, the student may start to prepare for the admission, as outlined above. Generally three different programmes are offered: 1. The M.Phil. programme leads to the degree of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.). Master’s degree in Genetics, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Botany, Medicine, Microbiology, or Zoology is pre-requisite for eligibility for admission to this programme. Defence of thesis before the examination board is required for qualification of this degree. Candidates are registered for five years and may submit their theses anytime after completing two years research and before the expiry of their registration. 2. The Ph.D. programme leads to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The M.Phil. degree in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Botany, Medicine, Microbiology, or Zoology is pre-requisite for eligibility for admission to this programme. Defence of thesis before the examination board is required for qualification of this degree. Candidates are registered for seven years and may submit their theses anytime after completing three and a half years research and before the expiry of their registration. 3. The M.Phil./Ph.D. programme differs from the above two in that the student (who may be holding M.Sc. degree in one of the above mentioned subjects) is initially enrolled in M.Phil. programme and allowed to work towards an M.Phil. degree, however, upon completion of two years research, the candidate apply for his/her admission to be converted to Ph.D. programme. At which time BASR will review his/her progress and if deemed fit by BASR, the student’s admission will be converted towards the Ph.D. programme with due transfer of full two year’s credit. The student may submit his/her research thesis after another one and a half years after the date of conversion. Should BASR judge the students research progress to be not meritorious enough for conversion to Ph.D. programme, the BASR may allow him/her to seek an M.Phil. degree instead of Ph.D. Final qualification for M.Phil. or Ph.D. degree requires submission of Research Thesis to BASR, which is evaluated by two subjects experts outside the country. Upon recommendation of the thesis-reviewers for the award of degree and examination board evaluates the student and his research in a viva voce examination. If two of the three examiners give adverse recommendation the thesis will be rejected. Upon recommendation of the BASR for the award of degree to the candidate, the Syndicate of the university finally confers the degree. For further
information, the prospective students are advised to contact BASR directly
or the concerned department.
