Introduction

Chairman: Dr. Najeeb Siddiqui

Applied Physics is a post graduate department offering courses leading to M.Sc. degree in Applied Physics with specialization either in ELECTRONICS or SEMICONDUCTORS.

The syllabus of M.Sc. Applied Physics with specialization in ELECTRONICS has been specially designed keeping in view the latest development in the subject and their relevance to the needs of Pakistan’s growing industry for the 21st century. The course provides a thorough training in Telecommunications, Signal Processing, Industrial Electronics & Control, and Micro-controllers & Microprocessor Interfacing and stresses upon the interactive nature of these branches of electronics.

It also offers courses in the fields of Opto-electronics, Semiconductor Electronics and Telematics. APPLIED PHYSICISTS with specialization in ELECTRONICS are expected to play a dominant role in modern industry in the fields of Industrial Control and Automation, Computer Engineering & Interfacing and Telecommunication systems. The students learn practical aspects of electronics in four  laboratory courses.   Experiments have been carefully designed to inculcate concepts of Analog Electronics, Digital Electronics, Industrial Electronics and Microprocessor circuits and systems.  An independent laboratory has also been established for microwave/ telecommunications experiments.

The department has equipped its computer laboratory with the latest hardware and software tools which include 15 advanced   computers, C++ Compilers. The 8051 micro-controller family Cross Assemblers / Compilers, Simulators, EDA tools like Protel PCB and Schematic Design and Electronic Work Bench.

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's) play a dominant role in the Modern Industrial The increase in the number of students has been possible due to a parallel increases in supporting facilities like; M.Sc. Electronics and Communication Laboratory, PLC laboratory, Computer and Interfacing Laboratory comprising a local area network (LAN) of advanced PCs and Research Laboratories.

Department has been revising its syllabus on regular basis keeping in view the recent  trends and future needs of the country in the field of  Communications, Instrumentation, Control and Computer interfacing. The main thrust of the syllabus is to train manpower in a synthesis of the following fields.

  1. Analog  and Digital systems.
  2. Industrial Electronics and Instrumentation.
  3. Tele-Communication Systems.
  4. Electronics Control & Digital Signal Processing.

Courses based on Quantum Mechanics, Semiconductor Electronics and Semiconductor Technology have also been included to provide an in depth understanding of the Solid State  Electronic devices which ultimately determine the performance and limitations of an electronics circuit.
The course also provides an option to students to specialize in SEMICONDUCTORS  by opting for special courses in M.Sc. final.

The Department, over the last few years, has developed facilities under a definite plan towards this end. Recently, a Computer and Computer Interfacing Laboratory comprising a local area network (LAN) of advanced PCs, Electronics and Telecommunication  Laboratory have been established. An Industrial Electronics laboratory is functioning  with advanced Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) facility. This will enable students to have hands-on experience in the modern industrial control techniques. Additionally, two research laboratories also provide modern facilities for M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs.

All those who have passed B.Sc./B.E. or equivalent  examination in the last five years with Physics and Mathematics with  least 45% aggregate marks are eligible to apply. Please note that also all those students of the University and who have appeared in the terminal examination of the fourth semester are eligible to appear in the admission test.
