Eligibility:
- Bachelor of medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.) and BDS or equivalent qualification from a recognized University plus one year house job.
- Copy of the valid registration certificate from Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (P.M. &D.C.).
Admission Procedure:
- The candidate is required to appear in the University of Karachi Entrance Test 2011.
- The candidate shall submit the following documents attested by class-I Gazette officer along with the Entrance Test Application Form:
- Photocopy of the last degree.
- Copy of the valid registration certificate from Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (P.M. & D.C.)
- Photocopy of Computerized National Identity Card.
- Two passport size photographs.
- Copy of valid NTS/University of Karachi Entrance Test.
- i. Candidate will be given 20 percent weightage for Graduate Assessment Test NTS score, if valid, and they will be exempted from appearing in section I (English+Communication Skills) of the University of Karachi Entrance Test. However, they will have to clear section II (Subject knowledge and application of 80% marks)
ii.Students who have passed University of Karachi Entrance Test held on 24-1-2010 will be exempted from appearing in the entrance test for 2011. However, they will have to apply on the prescribed form.
- The test shall comprise of the following sections:
a. Section I English+Communication Skills: 20%
Section II Subject Knowledge and Application: 80%
(Test Specification: The test will be based on core knowledge of basic medical science subjects for medicine faculty which includes Regional & applied Anatomy including Histology and Medical Embryology, Medical Physiology including Medical Biochemistry, Medical Pharmacology, General Pathology including Medical Microbiology & Parasitology.)
b. The candidates will be required to score at least 40% marks in section-I and 50% marks in section-II separately to become eligible for consideration for provisional admission
c. Qualifying the admission test is no guarantee to admission.
- After qualifying the test the candidate is required to submit the following along with the admission form.
- Two recent passport size photographs duly attested by the Head of Department / Centre/ Institute concerned.
- Copy of the valid registration certificate from Pakistan medical and Dental council (P.M. & D.C.).
- Degree holders of other Universities are required to submit Migration Certificates.
- Photocopy of computerized National Identity Card.
- 4 years leave (1 year for course work and 3 years training under his /her supervisor) certificate from the employer. Leave will be 5 years in case of sub-specialties. However, if the candidate is in service under his /her supervisor, NOC and 1 year leave (deputation letter) from the employer is required.
- A certificate of non-employment stating that during training no employment (other than training program) shall be undertaken/ executed on a stamp paper worth Rs. 20/- (attested by Notary Public/ Oath Commissioner).
- In case of foreign students, N.O.C, from the Ministry of Education, Government of Pakistan, Islamabad and an attested copy of valid visa & passport.
- Certificate from the Equivalence Committee, University of Karachi, in case, the accreditation status of the degrees is not clear.
- The Admission & Tuition fee, given in fee structure (see page 15).
Appointment of the Supervisor:
Every student will have to select a supervisor and training slot at the beginning of the program. The supervisor must fulfill the criteria of the University of Karachi.
BASR shall approve the detailed plan of work on the subject or any of its branches and the supervisor on the recommendation of the Board of Faculty of Medicine.
Criteria of Appointment of Supervisor:
- The Supervisor should have major postgraduate degree/ diploma i.e. FCPS, Ph.D., FRCS, FRCP, MRCOG, MS, MD or equivalent with at least 5 years standing.
- The Supervisor should be working in an academic position (at least Associate Professor) in a teaching hospital/ institution.
- The Supervisor of some other training/research program e.g. FCPS, should not have more than 8 trainees.
- The Supervisor should provide University of Karachi with a structured training program for his candidate, including one year course work.
- The Supervisor will guide his student in synopsis writing and cheek the synopsis before submission to University of Karachi.
Other details of the Program
- Duration of the program will be four years. During the first year the student will be required to complete 24 credit hours (3+0 and/or 2+1) courses of basic[[[ sciences at University of Karachi. Courses will be selected by supervisor. The next 3 years will be structured clinical training program under the supervisor.
- There will be three assessments:
- Basic sciences examination to be conducted by relevant department of the University of Karachi after course work.
- Thesis evaluation
- Theory and clinical/practical examination by three examiners selected by BASR. The supervisor will not be an examiner.
- Candidates having MRCP, FRCS MRCOG, FCPS or other major degree/ equivalent will be exempted from Part-A and theory Part of Part-C. Accordingly they will be exempted from 1 year course work and their training period will be reduced to 2 years only.
Examination:
The examination shall consist of three parts.
Part A-Basic Sciences Examination:
Basic Sciences examination to be conducted by relevant, departments of University of Karachi. At the end of each course, if the candidate fails, he/she has to re-appear and pass within 2 years of finishing course work. Only 4 attempts will be allowed. Meanwhile, he/she can join the clinical training program under intimation to the BASR section. In case the candidate fails to clear the basic science course exams, he will discontinue the program. However, he/she will be given a certificate of attendance only.
Part B-Thesis:
- Each candidate shall submit a thesis dealing with the subject or any of its branches.
- The candidate shall submit a declaration to the effect that thesis embodies the work conducted by the candidate.
- The supervisor shall also submit a certificate to the effect that the facilities did exist at the institute for the work embodied in the thesis and that the work has not already been submitted as a thesis to any other university.
- The thesis shall be examined by two examiners appointed by BASR on the recommendation of the Board of Faculty of Medicine.
- The examiners shall report as to whether the thesis be accepted or rejected. In the event of a disagreement between the examiners, BASR shall appoint a third examiner and the opinion of two of the three examiners shall be carried.
- Inadequacy of the thesis will be graded as

Inadequate:
- a. Minor alterations indicated, no extensive revision required, resubmission within 6 months.
b. Resubmission in revised form not later than a date prescribed.
- Totally inadequate: Rejected.
- After approval of the thesis, the candidate shall be permitted to appear in Part-C of the examination.
Part C-Theory and clinical and/ or practical examination:
The examination shall consist of:
- One written paper in each of the three subjects approved by the BASR on recommendation of the Board of Faculty of Medicine.
- A viva voce and clinical/ practical examination conducted by a panel of three examiners approved by the BASR on recommendation of the Board of Faculty of Medicine. The Supervisor will not be an examiner.
- The viva voce examination shall cover the entire field of the subject examiner including the thesis. Successful candidates will be declared as:
a) Passed
b) Passed with distinction.
- The candidates failing in Part-C shall have to appear in whole of the Part-C examination in each of the successive attempts. The candidate shall not be allowed to change the specialty. Only five total attempts shall be allowed to within three years of completion of training.
- Candidates having MRCP (UK), FRCS (UK), MRCOG (UK), FCPS (Pak) or and equivalent qualification, recognized by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, will be exempted from Part-A examination and written examination theory of Part-C. However, the candidate shall have to appear for a viva voce and clinical examination before the panel of examiners, appointed by BASR on the recommendation of the Board of faculty of Medicine.
